| Banana |
 |
| We like bananas because they have no bones
and will fruit in 12 to 18 months old, even indoors. Available
in dwarf and red skinned varieties that are very sweet
when tree ripened. Great source of potassium and the kids
love them. Try dipping frozen pieces of banana into concentrated
orange juice and refreezing as a nutritious snack. |
| Chocolate Pudding Fruit |
 |
| A tropical persimmon whose name Black Sapote
is derived from the native American word for sweet fruit,
sapotal. This 4-8 inch tomato shaped treat ripens from
November to March. Mix the fruit with yogurt or sour cream
for an instant moose. It is also excellent for rich breads
and cakes. |
| Cocoa |
 |
| This shrub to small tree is a native of
tropical America. The American Indians drank hot cocoa
made from nibs (toasted and ground cocoa beans), cane
sugar, and red hot pepper. Wow! What an eye opener. Cocoa
beans found in 6-8 inch long cocoa pods are covered with
edible pulp. The attractive red young leaves make this
an excellent houseplant. |
| Coconut |
| Native of Tahiti, the "symbol of the tropics"
often used as a houseplant. Fast growing palm proven to
help clean indoor air of smoke and harmful chemicals.
Bares coconuts 12 months a year for fresh coconut milk
and copra (dried coconut). |
| Coffee |
 |
| The real thing, of Arabian origin, is now
ubiquitous in the tropics. Easy to grow indoors, this
attractive shrub has fragrant white flowers and glossy
green leaves. The half inch round red fruit contains two
beans (seeds). Roast, grind and brew your own for an energizing
break. |
| Mango |
 |
| A fruit to be enjoyed in the shower with
a friend. The name mango will bring the same response
in any language. Ubiquitous in the tropics, now available
in dwarf tree sizes. Fruiting heavily in June to August,
mango may be picked early for preserves and Chutney, mature
but firm for frozen storage and fully ripe for fresh eating
and juice. Many varieties are available by special request. |
| Rose Apple |
 |
| This tropical fruit is 1.5 inch round, yellow
and fragrant. The pulp is eaten fresh or prised for jelly
or confections. The flavor of rose petals or jujube candy
makes this a favorite with the kids. With seeds removed
an soaked in brandy, the "Malabar Plum" will have the
grownups lining up for a taste. |
| Sugar Apple |
 |
| This is the most popular Anona in all tropical
areas of the world. Some feature red skin, pink flesh,
and a custard like texture. Known for early fruiting,
this small fruit tree is well suited to indoor culture.
With the luscious flavor of sugar pudding, the fruit are
enjoyed in many ways but never cooked. |
